Angels have superhuman power.  Angels have the ability to do things that humans are not able to do. The Bible contains a number of events concerning the great power of angels.

I. Angels have power to cause blindness.

1. There were   angels sent to Sodom.

Genesis 19:1 "And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;"

These angels were to see if Sodom and the surrounding town should be destroyed with fire, because of the sins of those cities.  Lot met the two angels at the city gate and invited them to stay in his home.  The sin of Sodom was homosexuality.  When the men of Sodom knew that the two strangers (men) had come to their city and were staying with Lot, they wanted to have a sexual relationship with them.  A large mob of young and old men gathered around the house of Lot to demand that these two men be brought out.  Lot went out of the house, closed the door behind him and  tried to reason with the mob.  Lot wanted to protect these two angels.

2. As the mob started to get Lot and break down the door of Lot’s house, the two angels pulled Lot into the house and caused those who tried to get to the door to become  .

Genesis 19:10-11 "But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.   11  And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door."

  Angels have power to bring blindness upon humans.

II. Angels have power to make fire come out of rocks.

An angel was sent to Gideon to inform him that he would be used of God to deliver the nation of Israel out of the hands of the Midianites.  Gideon wanted a sign from God.  Gideon made a meal for the angel.  Gideon prepared a kid, and made unleavened cakes and some broth.  The angel was under the oak tree when Gideon presented him with the meal.  The angel told Gideon to put the meat and bread on a rock and pour the broth on it.

  3. The angel took his staff, touched the meat and bread with it and, as he did,   came out of the   and burned the flesh and bread.

Judges 6:21 "Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight."

Angels have power to make fire come out of rocks.  What type of staff did this angel have that would cause fire to come out of a rock?

III. Angels have power to ascend to heaven in a flame of fire.

Manoah and his wife were told by an angel that they would have a special child.  This child would be Samson.  Manoah and his wife made a meat offering to the Lord and they set fire to the offering.

  4. The angel got into the   of fire and as the flame of the   went up in the air, the angel used it to   to heaven.

Judges 13:20 "For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground."

Angels have power to ascend to heaven in a flame of fire.

IV. Angels have the power to destroy an army.

The king of Assyria marched on Jerusalem, and God sent his angel to destroy them.  

5. In one night 185,000   of war were dead at the hand of one  .

2 Kings 19:35 "And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses."  

One angel had the power to destroy 185,000 soldiers.

V. Angels have power over fire.

In the book of Daniel there are two events recorded about the power of angels.  The first event is that of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.  These three men would not worship the image which king Nebuchadnezzar had made.  The punishment for breaking this law was to be cast into a burning fiery furnace.

  6. The three men were cast into the furnace of fire, and an came to protected them while they were in the fire.

Daniel 3:27-28 "And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king's counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them. 28  Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king's word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God."  

Angels have power over fire.

VI. Angels have power over animals.

The second event is that of Daniel when he broke the law of the Medes and Persians under king Darius.  No one was to pray for thirty days, except to the king.  Daniel, in spite of the law, continued to pray to God as he always did.  The punishment for breaking this law was to be cast into a den of lions.

  7. Daniel was put into the den of ; an came and the lions’ mouths.

Daniel 6:22 "My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt."  

After Daniel was taken out, his accusers and their families were cast into the den of lions and were eaten immediately.  Angels have power over animals.

VII. Angels have power over water.

8. An angel had the power to the water of the pool of Bethesda, so that whosoever was first in the pool would be of whatever disease they had.

John 5:4 "For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had."

Angels have power to turn water into a limited healing agent.

VIII. Angels have power to cause a man to be speechless.

When Gabriel announced to Zacharias that his wife Elisabeth would bear them a son in their old age, it was more than he could believe.

  9. Gabriel made Zacharias unable to , because of his doubt, until the child was born and named John as instructed.

Luke 1:19-20 "19  And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. 20  And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season."  

An angel  has the power to cause a man to be speechless for a period of months.

  IX. Angels have tremendous strength.

10. After the resurrection of Jesus, one came and back the large stone from the front of the tomb.

Matthew 28:2 “And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it."  

Angels have tremendous strength.

X. Angels have power to open prison doors.

The apostles were put in the common prison for preaching about Jesus.

Acts 5:18-20 "18  And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.   19  But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said,   20  Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life."  

11. An came and the prison doors and led the apostles out of the prison without the guards seeing them.

  After the apostles were out of prison, the angel locked the prison doors again. Angels have power to open locked prison doors.

XI. Angels have extraordinary power.

King Herod had James, the brother of John, killed with a sword, then apprehended Peter and put him in prison.  There were sixteen guards assigned to keep Peter in prison.  Two soldiers were chained to Peter, one to each arm.  Peter was asleep, chained to the soldiers, and there were soldiers outside his cell.

  12. An angel came in the prison, and his power was so great that a the guards could not see shined in the prison cell.

Acts 12:7 "And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands."  

The angel woke Peter up and told Peter to follow him.

  13. Peter got up and the came off, and the soldiers never knew what was going on.

  Peter followed the angel out to the prison courtyard without the soldiers being aware of them.

  14. As they came to the iron gate, the made the gate on its own.

Acts 12:10 "When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him."  

The power of the angel was so unbelievable that Peter thought he was dreaming.  After the angel left him standing in the street, then Peter knew that an angel delivered him out of prison. Angels have extraordinary power.

XII. Angels have other powers beyond human abilities.

In the book of Revelation there are passages that describe the power of angels over the wind and fire, their power to slay one third of mankind, and to fly through the air without wings.

  15. Angels have power to hold the of the earth.

Revelation 7:1 "And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree."

  16. An Angel has power over .

Revelation 14:18 "And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe."

17. Four angels have power to one third of mankind.

Revelation 9:15 "And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men."

18. Angels have power to without wings.

Revelation 14:6 "And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,"

19. An angel has such power that the earth was with his glory.

Revelation 18:1 "And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory."

  Angels have power beyond human abilities.
