Genesis 3

I. The serpent deceives Eve. Genesis 3:1-5

    A. The serpent questioned Eve as to what God said about what to eat?

       1. “Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”

    B. Eve knew what God said.

       1. “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden,
       God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.” Genesis 3:2-3

    C. The serpent told Eve that she misunderstood what God meant about dying.

       1. “Ye shall not surely die” Genesis 3:4

       2. God meant you would die to ignorance.

       3. If you ate of the tree, you would have knowledge of good and evil and would become as gods. Genesis 3:5

II. Eve was deceived by what she heard from the serpent and by what she saw. Genesis 3:6

    A. Eve reasoned by the way of the world.

       1. “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the father,
       but is of the world.” 1 John 2:16

       2. “Saw that the tree was good for food”------ “The lust of the flesh.”

       3. “It was pleasant to the eyes”----- “The lust of the eyes.”

       4. “To be desired to make one wise”----- “The pride of life.”

    B. Eve did not think she was going against what God had said.

    C. Eve took of the fruit and ate it. Genesis 3:6

III. Adam was not deceived. “And Adam was not deceived” 1 Timothy 2:14

    A. Eve gave the fruit to Adam and he ate it. Genesis 3:6

IV. The results of sin. Genesis 3:7-13

    A. They were embarrassed. Genesis 3:7

    B. They tried to cover their sin. Genesis 3:7

    C. They felt guilty and were afraid and hid themselves from God. Genesis 3:8-10

    D. They blamed someone else. Genesis 3:11-13

       1. Adam blamed Eve. Genesis 3:12

       2. Eve blamed the serpent. Genesis 3:13

V. The punishment of sin. Genesis 3:14-19

    A. Serpent cursed above all the animals and shall go on its belly. Genesis 3:14-15

       1. There will be war between the seed of the serpent and the seed of Eve.

       2. The seed of Eve will bruise the head of the seed of the serpent.

       3. The seed of the serpent will bruise the heel of the seed of Eve.

    B. Women will have great sorrow. Genesis 3:16

       1. They will bring forth children in pain.

       2. Their desire shall be to their husband.

       3. Their husbands shall rule over them.

    C. Men will have to work hard (sorrow) in the ground to eat. Genesis 3:17-19

       1. The ground is cursed.

       2. Thorns and thistles will grow in their crops.

       3. In the sweat of their face shall they eat bread.

VI. “Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.” Genesis 3:20

VII. God covered the sin of Adam and Eve. Genesis 3:21

    A. Took the blood of an animal and made coats of skins to cover Adam and Eve.

VIII. God cast Adam and Eve out of the garden and protected the tree of life. Genesis 3:22-24
