Genesis 12

Genesis 12- God's Call to Abraham and the Abrahamic Covenant

I. God calls Abram. Genesis 12:1-3

    A. Abram was to leave his father’s house.

    B. Abram was to go to a land that only God would show him.

    C. God would make his name great and make him a great nation.

    D. God would bless or curse those who blessed or cursed Abram.

    E. All the families of the earth would be blessed through Abram.

II. Abram obeyed God. Genesis 12:4-5

    A. Abram was 75 years old when he left Haran.

    B. Abram took Sarai, his wife, and Lot, his nephew with him.

    C. They went into the land of Canaan.

III. Abram travels to Sichem. Genesis 12:6

    A. Sichem is in the plain of Moreh where the Canaanites lived.

IV. God’s Covenant with Abram. Genesis 12:7

    A. God told Abram that he would give this land to his seed. (The word seed singular is used, not seeds plural) Galatians 3:16 “Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.”

    B. Abram builds an altar there.

V. Abram travels to a mountain east of Bethel. Genesis 12:8

    A. The mountain is between Bethel and Hai.

    B. Abram builds an altar.

VI. Abram travels south. Genesis 12:9

VII. Abram goes to Egypt. Genesis 12:10-20

    A. There is a great famine in the land of Canaan.

    B. Abram has Sarai to tell the Egyptians that she is his sister.

       1. Sarai was Abram’s half sister. Genesis 20:11-12 “And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake. And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.”

    C. Pharaoh gave great gifts to Abram for Sarai.

    D. God plagued Pharaoh with great plagues.

    E. Pharaoh gave Sarai back to Abram and told Abram to leave and keep all that was given to him.
