Genesis 14

Genesis 14- Abraham rescues Lot and meets Melchizedek

I. The battle of the kings. Genesis 14:1-11

    A. Four kings.

       1. Amraphel king of Shinar

       2. Arioch king of Ellasar

       3. Chedorlaomer king of Elam

       4. Tidal king of nations

    B. Four kings made war with five kings.

       1. Bera king of Sodom

       2. Birsha king of Gomorrah

       3. Shinab king of Admah

       4. Shemeber king of Zeboiim

       5. The king of Bela, which is Zoar

    C. The war was in the valley of Siddim, near the Dead Sea.

    D. The reason for the war.

       1. For 12 years the five kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Zoar paid tribute to Chedorlaomer king of Elam.

       2. In the thirteenth year they rebelled.

       3. In the fourteenth year was the war.

    E. The surrounding cities were defeated by the four kings.

    F. The four kings defeated the five kings and plundered their cities.

II. Lot was taken captive. Genesis 14:12

III. Abram rescues Lot. Genesis 14:13-17

    A. Abram is called a Hebrew, comes from abar, to pass over, or come from beyond.

    B. Abram had 318 trained servants that were born in his own house.

    C. He defeated the four kings and brought back all the goods, people and Lot.

    D. The king of Sodom met Abram after he returned.

IV. Melchizedek blesses Abram. Genesis 14:18-20, Hebrews 7:1-4

    A. Melchizedek, the king of Salem, the priest of God.

       1. Jesus’ priesthood is after the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 6:20-7:28

    B. Abram gives him tithes of all.

V. Abram assures the king of Sodom that he has not taken anything that belongs to him. Genesis 14:21-24
