Genesis 16

I. Sarai gives Hagar to Abraham. Genesis 16:1-6

    A. Sarai was barren.

    B. Sarai told Abram that God kept her from having a child.

       1. Abram was to have Hagar, an Egyptian, as his wife.

       2. The child they would have would be Sarai’s child.

    C. When Hagar was with child, Sarai became jealous.

       1. Sarai told Abram that Hagar, now with child, thought she was better than Sarai.

       2. Abram told Sarai to do what she wanted to do to Hagar.

       3. Hagar ran off.

II. An angel speaks to Hagar. Genesis 16:7-14

    A. The angel of the Lord finds Hagar by a fountain of water in the wilderness.

    B. The angel tells Hagar to go back to Sarai.

    C. The angel tells Hagar what her child will be like.

       1. His name will be Ishmael

       2. The descendents of Ishmael will multiply exceedingly, that it cannot be numbered for multitude.

       3. He and his descendants will be as a wild man.

       4. He and his descendants will be against every man.

       5. Every one will be against Ishmael and his descendants.

       6. Ishmael and his descendants will dwell in the presence of his brethren.

    D. Hagar named the well Beerlahairoi, which is between Kadesh and Bered.

III. Ishmael was born of Hagar. Genesis 16:15-16

    A. Abram was 86 years old when Ishmael was born.

IV. The New Testament teaching on Hagar and Sarah. Galatians 4:21-31
