Genesis 21 - Birth of Isaac

I. God visits Sarah, she conceives and bears a son as promised. Genesis 21:1, 2

    A. He is named Isaac and circumcised the eighth day. Genesis 21:3-4

    B. Sarah’s joy and thanks. Genesis 21:6, 7

    C. Abraham makes a feast at the weaning of Isaac. Genesis 21:8

II. Ishmael mocks and Sarah sees it. Genesis 21:9

    A. She complains to Abraham, and desires to have him cast out. Genesis 21:10

    B. Abraham is grieved. Genesis 21:11

    C. God commands it and gives the reason. Genesis 21:12

    D. God promises a blessing to Ishmael for Abraham’s sake. Genesis 21:13

III. Abraham sends Hagar and her son away.

    A. They wander in the wilderness and are about to perish for want of water. Genesis 21:14-16

    B. God calls to her and repeats his promise to Ishmael. Genesis 21:17-18

    C. God opens her eyes, and she sees a well. Genesis 21:19

    D. They dwell there, and Ishmael is an archer. Genesis 21:20

    E. Ishmael marries an Egyptian. Genesis 21:21

IV. Abimelech desires a covenant with Abraham. Genesis 21:22-23

    A. Abraham consents. Genesis 21:24

    B. Abraham reproves Abimelech because his servants took a well from him. Genesis 21:25

       1. Abimelech pleads his ignorance. Genesis 21:26

    C. Both of them make a covenant. Genesis 21:27-32

V. Abraham plants a grove, and calls on the name of Lord. Genesis 21:33-34 VI. The New Testament teaching on experiencing the promises of God. 2 Peter 1:4 “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
