Genesis 22 - The Offering of Isaac on Mt. Moriah

I. Abraham offers Isaac. Genesis 22:1-14

    A. God identifies Isaac as Abraham’s only son. Genesis 22:1-2

       1. Abraham is symbolic of God the Father.

       2. Isaac is symbolic of Jesus.

    B. Abraham is to offer Isaac as a burnt offering. Genesis 22:2

       1. God would offer his only begotten son, Jesus, as an offering for our sin. John 3:16, Ephesians 5:2, Hebrews 10:10-14

    C. God commands Abraham to offer Isaac on a certain mountain. Genesis 22: 2

       1. A mountain in the land of Moriah.

    D. Abraham took Isaac, two servants, a donkey, and the wood for a burnt offering and went to the land of Moriah. Genesis 22:4

    E. On the third day, Abraham saw the place afar off. Genesis 22:4

       1. On the third day Jesus was raised. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

       2. Mount Moriah, the same mountain Jesus was crucified on.

    F. Abraham told his servants to stay at the foot of the mountain.

       1. Abraham and Isaac would go to the top of the mountain, worship, and return. Genesis 22:5

       2. Abraham believed that God would raise his son after he was offered on the Altar. Hebrews 11:17-19

    G. Abraham and Isaac start up the mountain. Genesis 22:6-8

       1. Abraham put the wood on Isaac. Genesis 22:6

          a. Jesus carried his cross (wood) John 19:17

       2. Abraham took the fire and a knife. Genesis 22:6

       3. Isaac wants to know, “Where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Genesis 22:7

       4. Abraham answers; “God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering.” Genesis 22:8

          a. God would provide himself as a lamb for a burnt offering.

       5. 1,860 years later the Lamb of God was provided, Jesus. John 1:29 “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

    H. Abraham builds an altar on the top of the mountain. Genesis 22:9

       1. Abraham lays the wood in order.

       2. Abraham binds Isaac and lays him on the altar.

       3. Abraham takes the knife to slay Isaac. Genesis 22:10

    I. Angel of the Lord stops Abraham from offering Isaac. Genesis 22:11-12

       1. The angel knows now that Abraham fears God and is willing to offer Isaac, his only son.

    J. A ram is to be offered in the place of Isaac. Genesis 22:13

       1. A ram not a lamb.

       2. The sacrifice will not be completed until a ram is offered.

       3. When Jesus, the Lamb of God, died on the cross, he said, “It is finished.” The sacrifice started by Abraham was now finished.

    K. Abraham names the place, Jehovah-jireh. Genesis 22:14

       1. It means, “In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.”

       2. We have seen the love of God on Calvary, the mount of the Lord.

II. The Abrahamic covenant confirmed. Genesis 22:15-18

    A. Abraham’s seed would be as the stars of heaven and as the sand upon the sea shore. Genesis 22:17

    B. Abraham’s seed would possess the gate of his enemies.

    C. Through Abraham’s seed all the nations would be blessed. Genesis 22:18

    D. The word “seed” was used not “seeds.” Galatians 3:16

III. Abraham returns to his servants and they go to Beer-sheba. Genesis 22:19

IV. The children of Nahor, Abraham’s brother. Genesis 22:20-24
