    2. The families of Sarah’s son, Isaac. Genesis 21:1-5

    3. The families of Keturah’s sons. Genesis 25:1-4

    B. Rebekah was barren for 20 years until Isaac prayed for God to give them a child.

       1. God answered and Rebekah was to have twins.

    C. As the twins struggled together within her, Rebekah enquired of the Lord about it.

       1. God said the twins were two nations, two manners of people.

       2. One shall be stronger than the other.

       3. The elder shall serve the younger.

Note: According to Romans 9:6-26, was this information about Esau and Jacob given because God already knew what would happen (foreknowledge)? Or was this information about Esau and Jacob given because God willed it so?

    D. The first child came out covered with red hair and named Esau, which means “the hairy one.”

    E. The second child came out with his hand holding Esau’s heel and was named Jacob, which means “heel” or “supplanter.” Hosea 12:3

    F. Isaac was 60 years old when the twins were born.

    G. Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field.

    H. Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

    A. Esau returns from hunting and was faint to the point he thought he might die.

    B. Jacob had made some pottage and would sell Esau some for Esau’s birthright.

    C. Esau despised his birthright and sold it to Jacob for the pottage.

Note: In Hebrews 12:16-17, Esau is considered as a fornicator, and a profane person, because he sold his birthright. Later Esau wanted the blessing, but was rejected. Esau would not repent of despising his birthright, even though he sought the blessing with tears.
