Genesis 26

I. A Famine in the land. Genesis 26:1-2

    A. Isaac goes to Abimelech, king of the Philistines at Gerar.

    B. Isaac is not to go to Egypt.

II. God’s covenant with Isaac confirmed. Genesis 26:2-5

    A. As with Abraham, so also with Isaac, God uses the word “seed” and not “seeds” in the covenant; “I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven,” Galatians 3:16, which seed is Christ.

III. Isaac stays in Gerar. Genesis 26:6-16

    A. Isaac tells the men in Gerar that his wife is his sister.

       1. Isaac was not sure God would protect him.

    B. Abimelech, the king of the Philistines, realizes that Isaac lied and confronts him.

    C. The king orders protection for Isaac and all that he has.

    D. Isaac prospered and grew until the Philistines envied him.

    E. The king tells Isaac to leave.

IV. A dispute about wells. Genesis 26:17-23

    A. Isaac leaves and pitches his tent in the valley of Gerar.

    B. There was strife over the water wells until Isaac was far enough away from Gerar.

V. Isaac assured of God’s protection. Genesis 26:24-25

VI. A covenant between Isaac and Abimelech. Genesis 26:26-33

VII. Esau’s wives. Genesis 26:34-35

    A. Esau was 40 years old when he married Judith and Bashemath.

    B. Isaac and Rebekah are grieved because of the two wives.
