Genesis 31

I. Jacob secretly leaves Laban. Genesis 31:1-16

    A. Jacob is accused of robbing Laban of his cattle and sheep. Genesis 31:1

    B. God instructs Jacob to return to the land of his fathers and he will be with him. Genesis 31:2-3

    C. Jacob tells Rachel and Leah that God wants him to leave. Genesis 31:4-16

       1. After Laban would agree to one type of cattle for Jacob and that type would increase, then Laban would change his mind to a different type. This would happen over and over again. Genesis 31:4-9

       2. God speaks to Jacob in a dream and lets him know that the speckled, ring-streaked, and grizzled cattle and sheep are his and God will be with him. Genesis 31:10-13

       3. Rachel and Leah wondered about their inheritance from their father. Genesis 31:14-15

       4. Rachel and Leah realize that they have their inheritance, since God has blessed Jacob, and they will do what God wants them to do. Genesis 31:16

II. Jacob goes to mount Gilead. Genesis 31:17-21

    A. Jacob gathers his wives, children, and all that he has and goes to Gilead. Genesis 31:17-18

    B. Rachel steals her father’s images and Jacob is not aware of it. Genesis 31:19

III. Laban overtakes Jacob. Genesis 31:22-42

    A. After 7 days Laban overtook Jacob in mount Gilead. Genesis 31:22-23

    B. God spoke to Laban by a dream that he was not to hurt Jacob. Genesis 31:24

    C. Laban rebukes Jacob. Genesis 31:25-29

    D. Laban accuses Jacob of stealing the images of his God. Genesis 31:30

    E. Jacob was not aware that Rachel had taken the images. Genesis 31:31-32

    F. Rachel hid the images in the furniture she was setting on. Genesis 31:33-35

    G. Laban cannot find the images.

    H. Jacob rebukes Laban. Genesis 31:36-42

IV. The covenant between Jacob and Laban. Genesis 31:43-55

    A. They made a covenant at Galeed, Mizpah, not to hurt each other.
