Genesis 35

I. God sends Jacob to Bethel. Genesis 35:1-8

    A. Jacob is to live there and build an altar unto God. Vs. 1

    B. Jacob has his household to give him all their idols and anything that refers to a strange god. Vs. 2-4

       1. He hides them under an oak which was by Shechem. Vs. 4

    C. The terror of God was on all the cities round about Jacob. Vs. 5

    D. Jacob built an altar to God at Bethel. Vs. 6-7

    E. Rebekah’s nurse, Deborah, died and was buried at Bethel. Vs. 8

II. God blesses Jacob at Bethel. Vs. 9-15

    A. God changes Jacob’s name to Israel. Vs. 9-10

    B. God promises Israel that he and his seed would be a great nation. Vs. 11

    C. God promises Israel that he and his seed would have the land that God had promised to Abraham and Isaac. Vs. 12

    D. Israel set up a pillar and poured a drink offering and oil upon it at Bethel. Vs. 13-15

III. Israel goes to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. Vs. 16-21

    A. Rachel gives birth to Benjamin and dies.

    B. Rachel is buried in Bethlehem.

IV. Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, commits adultery with Israel’s wife, Bilhah. Vs. 22

V. The 12 sons of Israel. Vs. 22-26

    A. The sons of Leah; Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. Vs. 23

    B. The sons of Rachel; Joseph and Benjamin. Vs. 24

    C. The sons of Bilhah; Dan and Naphtali. Vs. 25

    D. The sons of Zilpah; Gad and Asher. Vs. 26

VI. Isaac dies. Vs. 27-29

    A. Jacob goes to Mamre to be with Isaac. Vs. 27

    B. Isaac dies at the age of 180. Vs. 28

“And the days of Isaac were 180.” He lived, 40 years after he had made his will, and blessed his two sons. Jacob was now 120 years of age, being born when his father was 60; and Joseph was now 29 years of age, so that Isaac lived 12 years after the selling of Joseph into Egypt; he was 5 years older than his father Abraham was when he died at 175.” John Gill’s Expositor.

    C. Esau and Jacob buried Isaac. Vs. 29
