Genesis 37

I. Jacob, Israel, is in the land of Canaan. Vs. 1

II. Joseph, Israel’s son, hated by his brothers. Vs. 2-4

    A. Joseph is 17. vs. 2

    B. Joseph tells Israel the evil his brothers were doing. Vs. 2

    C. Israel loved Joseph more than the other children. Vs. 3

    D. Israel made Joseph a coat of many colors. Vs. 3

    E. Joseph’s brothers hated him more as the days went by. Vs. 4

III. Joseph’s two dreams. Vs. 5-11

    A. First dream. Vs. 5-8

       1. Joseph told his brothers’ the dream and they hated him the more. Vs. 5-6

       2. Joseph dreamed that they were binding sheaves in the field. Vs. 7

       3. Joseph’s sheaf stood upright. Vs. 7

       4. Joseph’s brothers sheaves stood around his and bowed to | his sheaf. Vs. 7

          a. This was fulfilled at first by his 10 brothers. Genesis 42:6

          b. This was fulfilled later by all 11 brothers. Genesis 43:26

       5. This dream showed that one day, Joseph would rule over his brothers. Vs. 8

       6. Joseph’s brothers hated him even more for this dream. Vs. 8

    B. Second dream. Vs. 9-11

       1. Joseph dreamed that the sun, moon and eleven stars made respectful gesture to him. Vs. 9

          a. This was fulfilled when Israel and all the family moved to Egypt. Genesis 46:1-7

       2. Joseph told this dream to his father and brothers. Vs. 9-10

       3. Israel rebuked him, but observed the dream. Vs. 10-11

       4. Joseph’s brothers envied him. Vs. 11

IV. Israel sends Joseph to check on his brothers. Vs. 12-17

V. The plot against Joseph. Vs. 18-24

    A. Joseph’s brothers plotted to kill him. Vs. 18-20

    B. Reuben interceded for Joseph. Vs. 21-22

    C. They strip Joseph of his coat of many colors. Vs. 23

    D. They cast him into a dry empty pit. Vs. 24

VI. Joseph sold to the Ishmaelites. Vs. 25-28

    A. A company of Ishmaelites passed by on their way to Egypt. Vs. 25

    B. Judah suggested that they sell Joseph to the Ishmaelites. Vs. 26-27

    C. They sold Joseph for 20 pieces of silver. Vs. 28

    D. Joseph was taken to Egypt. Vs. 28

VII. Reuben returns to rescue Joseph from the pit. Vs. 29-30 A. Joseph is not there, and Reuben rent his clothes in mourning. Vs. 29

VIII. The plot to deceive Israel about Joseph. Vs. 31-35

    A. They dipped the coat of Joseph in the blood of a goat. Vs. 31

    B. They asked Israel if this coat was Joseph’s. Vs. 32

    C. Israel thinks that Joseph was killed by animals. Vs. 33

    D. Israel mourns for many days. Vs. 34

    E. No one could comfort him. Vs. 35
