1 Samuel 15


I. Saul commanded to destroy Amalek. Vs. 1-5

    A. God remembered what the Amalekites did to Israel in Rephidim when they came out of Egypt. Exodus 17:8-16

       1. God promised Moses and Joshua that he would destroy the Amalekites. Exodus 17:14

    B. Saul was to destroy everything, all the people, animals, and all that they have. Vs. 3

    C. Saul took 200,000 footmen and 10,000 men of Judah. Vs. 4

II. Saul spares Agag the king of Amalek. Vs. 6-9

    A. Saul warned the Kenites to leave. Vs. 6

    B. Saul destroyed everyone except Agag the king. Vs. 8

    C. Saul kept the best of the animals. Vs. 9

III. God rejects Saul. Vs. 10-23

    A. God told Samuel that Saul did not obey him. Vs. 10-12

    B. Saul told Samuel that he performed the commandment of the Lord. Vs. 13

    C. Samuel wanted to know why he brought the animals. Vs. 14

    D. They brought the best of the sheep and oxen to sacrifice unto the Lord. Vs. 15

    E. Samuel accused Saul of not obeying God. Vs. 16-19

    F. Saul insists that he has obeyed God. Vs. 20

    G. The people took the spoil to sacrifice unto God. Vs. 21

    H. “To obey is better than sacrifice, and to harken than the fat of rams.” Vs. 22

    I. “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.” Vs. 23

    J. God has rejected Saul from being king. Vs. 23

IV. Saul’s confession and humiliation. Vs. 24-31

    A. Confession begins with “I”. Vs. 24

       1. “I have sinned:”

       2. “I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and thy words:”

       3. “I feared the people,”

       4. “I obeyed their voice.”

    B. Pardon my sin. Vs. 25

       1. Turn again with me. (Restore my kingdom)

    C. Samuel reminded Saul that his kingdom would not be restored. Vs. 26-29

    D. “I have sinned” vs. 30

       1. “Yet honor me now” (Let the people know I am forgiven at the price of my kingdom)

    E. “So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshiped the Lord.”

V. Samuel slays Agag. Vs. 32-33

VI. Samuel leaves Saul and would never see him again until the day of his death. Vs. 34-35

    A. Samuel grieves for Saul and his kingdom. Vs. 35
