I. Jonathan’s covenant with David. Vs. 1-4

II. Saul becomes jealous of David. Vs. 5-16

    A. The women would greet Saul and David with a song as they returned from battle. Vs. 1-6

    B. They would sing, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” Vs. 7-9

    C. An evil spirit from God came upon Saul. Vs. 10

       1. David played the harp to calm Saul. Vs. 10

       2. Saul threw a javelin at David twice, and David escaped. Vs. 11

    D. Saul made David captain over a thousand. Vs. 12-13

    E. “David behaved himself wisely in all his ways.” Vs. 14

    F. “The Lord was with him.” Vs. 14

    G. All Israel and Judah loved David. Vs. 15-16

III. David marries Saul’s daughter. Vs. 17-30

    A. Saul wanted David to marry his oldest daughter Merab. Vs. 17

    B. David thought he was not worthy to be the king’s son-in-law. Vs. 18

    C. Merab was given to Adriel the Meholathite for his wife. Vs. 19

    D. Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved David. Vs. 20

    E. Saul wanted David to marry Michal. Vs. 21

    F. David could not afford a dowry. Vs. 22-23

    G. Saul wanted for a dowry one hundred foreskins of the Philistines. Vs. 24-25

       1. Saul’s plan was for David to be killed by the Philistines.

    H. David and his men slew two hundred Philistines and brought their foreskins to Saul. Vs. 26-27

    I. Saul gives Michal to David for his wife. Vs. 27

    J. Seeing that the Lord was David, Saul was afraid of him. Vs. 28-30
