I. The death of Samuel. Vs. 1

II. David asks Nabal for help. Vs. 2-9

    A. Nabal vs. 2-3

       1. Nabal was very great.

       2. Nabal had 3,000 sheep and 1,000 goats.

       3. Nabal’s name means fool.

       4. Nabal was evil in all his doings.

       5. Nabal was of the house of Caleb.

    B. Abigail was Nabal’s wife. Vs. 3

       1. Abigail was very beautiful.

       2. Abigail was a woman of good understanding.

    C. Nabal was shearing his sheep in Carmel. Vs. 2

    D. David sends 10 young men to ask for food. Vs. 4-9

       1. David did not harm any of his shepherds.

       2. David did not take any of his sheep.

III. Nabal refuses to help David. Vs. 10-12

    A. Nabal mocks David in asking who he was. Vs. 10

    B. Should he give to anyone whom he does not know whence they are? Vs. 11

       1. David is no different from any other begger.

IV. David takes 400 men to destroy Nabal and his entire household. Vs. 13

V. A servant told Abigail what Nabal did and that David is on his way to destroy Nabal and his entire household. Vs. 14-17

VI. Abigail intercedes for Nabal. Vs. 18-31

    A. Abigail prepares food to take to David. Vs. 18-19

    B. David is upset because Nabal has returned evil for the good that David showed him. Vs. 20-22

    C. Abigail bows herself before David. Vs. 23

    D. Abigail wants David to blame her and not Nabal. Vs. 24

    E. Abigail asks for permission to talk to David. Vs. 24

    F. Abigail intercedes for Nabal. Vs. 25-51

       1. Nabal is of Belial (an evil man). Vs. 25

       2. His name means a fool which he is. Vs. 25

       3. Abigail did not see the men David sent for help. Vs. 25

       4. The Lord has delayed you from avenging thyself against Nabal. Vs. 26

       5. Let thy enemies be as Nabal, fools. Vs. 26

       6. Receive the food that I have brought for your men. Vs. 27

       7. Forgive us, and the Lord will bless you. Vs. 28

       8. No evil has been found in all your battles for the Lord. Vs. 28

       9. A man (Saul) has risen to pursue you, yet you showed mercy. Vs. 29

       10. God removes your enemies as a stone goes out of a sling. Vs. 29

       11. When God makes you king over Israel, let not this shedding of Nabal blood bring grief to your heart. Vs. 30-31

VII. David repents and forgives Nabal. Vs. 32-35

    A. David thanks the Lord for sending Abigail to him. Vs. 32

    B. David thanks Abigail for her advice. Vs. 33

    C. If she had not come, there would not have been any one left of Nabal’s household by morning. Vs. 34

    D. David receives her food and forgives Nabal. Vs. 35

VIII. Abigail tells Nabal what she has done. Vs. 36-37

IX. Nabal dies within 10 days. Vs. 38

X. David took Abigail and Ahinoam to wife. Vs. 39-43

    A. David asks Abigail to be his wife and she agrees. Vs. 39-42

    B. David also took Abinoam of Jezreel to be his wife. Vs. 43

XI. Saul had given Michal, David’s wife, to Phalti son of Laish, son of Gallim. Vs. 44
