1 Samuel 28


I. The Philistines assemble against Israel. Vs. 1-6

    A. Achish wanted assurance that David and his men would fight with the Philistines against Israel. Vs. 1-2

    B. David gives an ambiguous answer. Vs. 2

    C. Samuel was dead. Vs. 3

    D. Saul had put the witches and wizards out of the land. Vs. 3

    E. The Philistines camped in Shunem. Vs. 4

    F. Israel camped in Gilboa. Vs. 4

    G. When Saul saw the Philistines he was afraid. Vs. 5

    H. Saul prayed unto the Lord and there was no answer. Vs. 6

II. Saul consults the Witch of Endor about Samuel. Vs. 7-14

    A. Saul wanted his servants to find a witch and they found one at Endor. Vs. 7

    B. Saul disguised himself and went to her with two men. Vs. 8

    C. Saul promises the witch that she would not be punished. Vs. 9-10

    D. Saul wanted the witch to bring up Samuel. Vs. 11

    E. When the witch saw Samuel she then knew who Saul was. Vs. 12

    F. Saul wanted to know what she saw. Vs. 13

       1. She saw gods ascending out to the earth.

    G. Saul wanted to know what form he had. Vs. 14

       1. She saw an old man covered with a mantle.

    H. Saul perceived that it was Samuel and bowed himself. Vs. 14

III. Samuel speaks to Saul from the dead. Vs. 15-25

    A. Samuel asks Saul why he was there. Vs. 15

       1. Saul tells of the war with the Philistines.

       2. He tells that God is departed from him.

       3. He needs to know what to do.

    B. Samuel tells Saul why God is departed from him. Vs. 16-18

       1. God has taken the kingdom from him and has given it to David. Vs. 17

       2. Saul did not obey God when he was to completely destroy the Amalekites. Vs. 18

    C. Samuel tells Saul that he and his sons will die in the war and Israel will be defeated by Philistines. Vs. 19

IV. Saul is weak from the experience with the witch. Vs. 20-25
