Matthew 16


I. The Pharisees and Sadducees wanted to see a sign from heaven. Matthew 16:1-4 [Mark 8:10-12]

    A. Jesus called them hypocrites, because they could discern the signs of the sky, but not the signs of the times as to what God was doing. Matthew 16:2-4

II. Jesus teaches about the Leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Matthew 16:5-12

    A. As Jesus and the disciples went to the other side of the sea, the disciples forgot to take bread. Matthew 16:5

    B. Jesus warns the disciples of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Mathew 16:6

    C. The disciples thought Jesus was upset because they had no bread. Matthew 16:7

    D. Jesus rebukes them because they had forgotten about the feeding of the five thousand and four thousand and thought that Jesus could not provide bread for them. Matthew 16:8-10

    E. Then they understood it was not the leaven of bread, but the doctrine (leaven) of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees that he was talking about. Matthew 16:11-12

III. Different Opinions Concerning Christ. Matthew 16:13-20

    A. Some of the people thought Jesus was John The Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. Matthew 16:13-14

    B. Peter said that Jesus was “The Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Matthew 16:15-17

       1. This knowledge was from God the Father. Matthew 16:17

    C. Jesus calls him Simon, which means hearing. Matthew 16:18

       1. Then Jesus calls him Peter (Petros - pet’-ros), which means a regular size rock or stone.

       2. “upon this rock” (petra - pet’-ra) which means a huge projecting rock.

    D. Peter is a regular size rock, but his statement is a huge projecting rock. Matthew 16:18-20

       1. Upon Peter’s statement Jesus would build his church. Matthew 16:18

       2. The church could attack the gates of hell and the gates would not hold. Matthew 16:18

       3. The believers of the church would have the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 16:19

IV. Jesus predicts His Sufferings and Coming Glory. Matthew 16:21-23

    A. The Jewish elders, chief priests and scribes would kill him. Matthew 16:21

    B. Jesus would be raised again the third day. Matthew 16:21

    C. Peter rebuked Jesus in that he did not want him to die. Matthew 16:22

    D. This action of Peter was the results of Satan. Matthew 16:23

V. The Conditions of Discipleship. Matthew 16:24-26

    A. Deny yourself.

    B. Be ready to die.

    C. Lose you life for Christ.

VI. Jesus mentions the Rapture and his Second Coming. Matthew 16:27-28

    A. His Second Coming in all his glory. Matthew 16:27

    B. Jesus would give an example of the Rapture, his kingdom, with his Transfiguration. Matthew 16:288
