John 20

I. Mary Magdalene goes to the tomb of Christ. John 20:1

    A. On the first day of the week.

    B. While it was yet dark.

    C. Mary sees the stone rolled away from the tomb.

II. Mary tells Peter and John. John 20:2

    A. Someone has taken the Lord’s body.

III. Peter and John go to the tomb of Christ. John 20:3-11

    A. John got to the tomb first and looked in. John 20:4

       1. John saw the linen clothes lying in the tomb, but did not go in. John 20:5

    B. Peter followed John and he went in the tomb. John 20:6

       1. Peter saw the linen clothes lying in the tomb.

       2. Peter saw the napkin, that was about the head of Christ. John 20:7

          a. The napkin was folded together and lying in a separate place, not with the linen clothes.

    C. John goes in the tomb. John 20:8

       1. John saw and believed.

    D. Peter and John did not know the scripture about the resurrection of Christ. John 20:9

    E. Peter and John went away again unto their own homes. John 20:10

IV. Mary sees the resurrected Christ. John 20:11-18

    A. Mary weeping looked into the tomb. John 20:11

    B. Mary sees two angels in white sitting, one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. John 20:12

    C. The angels asks her, “Woman, why weepest thou?” John 20:13

    D. Mary thought someone had taken the body of Jesus. John 20:13

    E. Mary turned around and saw Jesus, but did not recognize him. John 20:14

    F. Jesus asks her, “Woman, why weepest thou? Whom seekest thou?” John 20:15

    G. “She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.” John 20:15

    H. Jesus called her name. John 20:16

       1. Mary recognized Jesus.

       2. Mary wanted to touch him. John 20:17

       3. “Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” John 20:17

V. Mary tells the disciples that she had seen the risen Lord. John 20:18

VI. Jesus appears to the disciples. John 20:19-25

    A. Later that day at evening, being the first day of the week. John 20:19

    B. The doors were locked for fear of the Jews. John 20:19

    C. Jesus stood in their midst. John 20:19

    D. Jesus said. “Peace be unto you.” John 20:19

    E. Jesus showed them his hands and side. John 20:20

    F. They were glad. John 20:20

    G. “Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.” John 20:21

       1. Jesus gives them a commission.

    H. “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:” John 20:22

       1. The disciples received the Holy Ghost 50 days before Pentecost.

    I. “Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.” John 20:23

       1. The disciples are to go in his authority.

    J. Thomas was not there at this time. John 20:24

       1. “Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.” John 20:25

VII. Jesus appears again to the disciples. John 20:26-29

    A. Eight days later. John 20:26

    B. Thomas was there. John 20:26

    C. The doors were locked. John 20:26

    D. Jesus stood in their midst. John 20:26

    E. Jesus said. “Peace be unto you.” John 20:26

    F. “Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.” John 20:27

    G. “And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.” John 20:28

    H. “Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” John 20:29

VIII. The Purpose of the Bible. John 20:30-31

    A. There are many things that Jesus did and taught, but are not in the Bible. John 20:30

    B. The things that are written in the Bible are for you to believe: John 20:31

       1. That Jesus is the Christ.

       2. That Jesus is the Son of God.

       3. That you might have eternal life through his name.
