Acts 2


I. Fulfillment of the Feast of Pentecost. Vs. 1-13

    A. The day of Pentecost. Vs. 1

       1. Pentecost is the fourth feast of the Lord. Leviticus 23:15-22

       2. The Feast of Pentecost is to be held 50 days after the feast of the Feast of First Fruits.

       3. The Feast of Pentecost was a prophecy about the outpouring of the power of the Holy Spirit.

    B. The members of the first church were all in one accord and in one place. Vs. 1

    C. Suddenly there came a sound from heaven. Vs. 2

       1. It sounded like a mighty rushing wind.

       2. It filled the entire house.

    D. There appeared unto them cloven tongues. Vs. 3

       1. The tongues appeared like as fire.

       2. A tongue sat upon each of them.

    E. They all were filled with the Holy Ghost (Spirit). Vs. 4

    F. They began to speak in other tongues (languages). Vs. 4

       1. As the Holy Spirit gave them utterance.

    G. There were in Jerusalem Jews out of every nation under heaven. Vs. 5

    H. A multitude came together and heard the gospel in their language. Vs. 6

    I. The multitude was amazed and marveled. Vs. 7-8

       1. Those who were speaking were Galileans and they spoke in different languages.

    J. The different languages that they spoke. Vs. 9-11

       1. Parthian

       2. Medes

       3. Elamites

       4. Mesopotamia

       5. Judea

       6. Cappadocia

       7. Pontus

       8. Asia

       9. Phrygia

       10. Pamphylia

       11. Egypt

       12. Libya

       13. Cyrene

       14. Rome

       15. Jews and proselytes

       16. Cretes

       17. Arabians


Acts 1:8 “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

At the same time (both), the first Church witnessed to those in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the uttermost part of the earth on the day of Pentecost.

    K. What did this mean? Were they full of new wine? Vs. 12-13

II. Peter’s sermon. Vs. 14-36

    A. Peter explains that the prophecy of Joel 2:28-32 is starting to be fulfilled by the disciples speaking in different languages. Vs. 14-21

    B. Jesus of Nazareth was approved by God. Vs. 22.

       1. By miracles, wonders, and signs.

    C. It was prophesied that Jesus would be crucified by wicked hands. Vs. 23.

    D. It was prophesied that Jesus would be raised from the dead. Vs. 24-35

       1. Psalms 16:8-11

          a. David prophesied that Jesus would be raised to sit on his throne. Vs. 29-30

          b. That the soul of Jesus was not left in hell, neither would his flesh see corruption. Vs. 31

       2. We are witnesses that God raised Jesus from the dead. Vs. 32

       3. We are witnesses that Jesus ascended up to the right hand of God. Vs. 33

       4. You have heard and seen the proof of the ascension by the Holy Ghost speaking in different languages through these disciples. Vs. 33

       5. The prophecy of David in Psalms 110:1 is being fulfilled. Vs. 34-35

    E. “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.” Vs. 36

III. The invitation. Vs. 37-41

    A. Their hearts were pricked. Vs. 37

       1. They were under conviction.

    B. “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

    C. Peter told them to repent. Vs. 38

    D. Peter told them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Vs. 38

       1. Because of the remission of their sins. Vs. 38

    E. They will receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Vs. 38

       1. This is the promise of God to all who are saved. Vs. 39

    F. Peter gave other instructions with testimony and exhortation. Vs. 40

    G. Those that believed and repented were baptized. Vs. 41

    H. On the same day about 3,000 were added to the church. Vs. 41

IV. The ministry of the first church. Vs. 42-47

    A. They continued steadfastly:

       1. In the apostles’ doctrine

       2. In fellowship.

       3. In breaking of bread.

       4. In prayers.

    B. There was great reverence or awe. Vs. 43

    C. Many wonders and signs were done. Vs. 43

    D. They had all things common. Vs. 44-45

       1. They sold their possessions and goods.

       2. They helped everyone according to their needs.

    E. Daily they were with one accord in the temple. Vs. 46

    F. Daily they had bread from house to house. Vs. 46

    G. Daily they did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart. Vs. 46

    H. Daily they were praising God. Vs. 47

    I. Daily they had favor with all the people. Vs. 47

    J. Daily the Lord added to the church such as should be saved. Vs. 47
