Acts 4


I. Peter and John imprisoned. Vs. 1-3

    A. Peter and John were arrested by the captain of the temple, priest and Sadducees. Vs. 1

    B. They were arrested because they taught and preached the resurrection from the dead by Jesus. Vs. 2-3

II. Five thousand men believed and were saved. Vs. 4

    A. The church at Jerusalem grew from 120 to 3,120 on the day of Pentecost. Acts 2:41

    B. The church at Jerusalem grew from 3,120 to over 8,120. vs. 4

III. Peter and John are brought before the high priest. Vs. 5-7

    A. Gathered with Annas, the high priest, were his kindred, rulers, elders, scribes, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander. Vs. 5-6

    B. They asked Peter and John concerning the healing of the lame man, “By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?” Vs. 7

IV. Peter’s answer to the high priest. Vs. 8-12

    A. Peter was filled with the Holy Ghost. Vs. 8

    B. The lame man was made whole by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Vs. 9-10

       1. Whom ye crucified.

       2. Whom God raised from the dead.

    C. Jesus is the corner stone as prophesied by Isaiah 28:16. vs. 11

    D. Jesus is the only name whereby people can be saved. Vs. 12

V. The high priest threatened Peter and John and commanded them not to preach in the name of Jesus. Vs. 13-18

    A. They could not understand the boldness of Peter and John. Vs. 13

    B. They perceived that Peter and John were unlearned and ignorant men. Vs. 13

    C. They knew that Peter and John had been with Jesus. Vs. 13

    D. They could not deny the healing of the lame man. Vs. 14-16

    E. To keep the teaching from spreading, they commanded Peter and John not to teach or preach in the name of Jesus. Vs. 17-18

VI. Peter’s answer to the high priest. Vs. 19-20

    A. They must teach what they have seen and heard.

VII. Peter and John are threatened and turned loose. Vs. 21-22

    A. The healed lame man was over 40 years old. Vs.22

VIII. Peter and John gave their report to the church. Vs. 23

IX. The prayer that they prayed. Vs. 24-30

    A. They praised God: vs. 24-28

       1. As the Creator. Vs. 24

       2. That he foretold what would happen in Psalms 2:1-2. Vs. 25-26

       3. That what Herod, Pontius Pilate, the Gentiles and the people of Israel did to Jesus was according to his will. Vs. 27-28

    B. Their prayer request. Vs. 29-30

       1. Behold their threatening. Vs. 29

       2. Grant unto thy servants boldness to speak thy word. Vs. 29

       3. Stretch forth thine hand to heal. Vs. 30

       4. Let signs and wonders be done by the name of Jesus. Vs. 30

X. The results of the prayer. Vs. 31

    A. The place was shaken.

    B. They were all filled with the Holy Ghost.

    C. They spoke the word of God with boldness.

XI. The conduct of the church members in meeting their needs. Vs. 32-37

    A. They all were of one heart and one soul. Vs. 32

    B. They had all things common. Vs. 32

    C. They witness of the resurrection of Jesus with great power. Vs. 33

    D. Great grace was upon them all. Vs. 33

       1. They helped one another without favor.

    E. No one lacked for living necessities. Vs. 34

    F. They sold land and houses and gave the money to apostles. Vs. 34-35

    G. Distribution was made unto everyone as they had need. Vs. 35

    H. Joses sold his land and gave the money to the apostles. Vs. 36-37

       1. Joses was called Barnabas which means the son of consolation.

       2. Barnabas was a Levite of the country of Cyprus.
