1 Thessalonians 2


I. Proof that the words Paul used were not his own, but in truth the words of God. 1-13

    A. The words were not in vain. Vs. 1

       1. Isaiah 55:11 “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”

       2. 1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”

    B. The words were bold through great suffering. Vs. 2

       1. Acts 4:31 “And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.”

    C. The words were not of deceit, uncleanness or guile. Vs. 3

       1. Proverbs 30:5 “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.”

       2. 2 Timothy 3:16 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”

    D. The words were not to please men but honor God. Vs. 4

       1. 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 “And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”

    E. The words were not flattering or a cloak of covetousness. Vs. 5

       1. 2 Corinthians 4:2 “But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.”

    F. The words were not dependent upon others for support. Vs. 6

       1. 1 Peter 1:25 “But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”

    G. The words were compassionate. Vs. 7

       1. Psalms 19:8 “The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.”

    H. The words were alive with deep love. Vs. 8

       1. Ephesians 5:25-27 “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”

    I. The words were self-supporting. Vs. 9

       1. 1 Peter 1:23 “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.”

    J. The words were holy, righteous, and blameless. Vs. 10

       1. Psalms 119:9-11 “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

    K. The words were comforting and firm. Vs. 11

       1. 1 Peter 2:2 “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:”

    L. The words were challenging. Vs. 12

       1. Ps 119:97-100 “O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.”

    M. The words are the words of God. Vs. 13

       1. 2 Peter 1:20-21 “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”

II. The results of the word of God. Vs. 14

    A. Those who heard the words of God became followers of the churches of God. Vs. 14

       1. Colossians 3:15-17 “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”

    B. Those who heard the words of God were persecuted. Vs. 14-19

    C. Those who receive the words of God become crowns of rejoicing for the ones who proclaim the words of God. Vs. 19-20
