1 Thessalonians 5

I. The day of the Lord is

    A. The Rapture for the saved.

    B. The wrath of God (Tribulation Period) for the lost. Vs. 9

Note: The Rapture starts the Tribulation Period, the wrath of God.

II. The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night. Vs. 2 Matthew 24:42-44, Matthew 25:13, Mark 13:34-35, Luke 12:39-40

    A. The times and seasons when it will happen. Vs. 1

       1. No need to write about it. Vs. 1, Mark 13:32

    B. To steal the bride of Christ away. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

    C. To catch the lost by surprise to punish them.

       1. The lost will say Peace and safety. Vs. 3

       2. Then sudden destruction. Vs. 3

       3. Like labor pains of childbirth. Vs. 3

       4. The lost will not escape. Vs. 3, Luke 17:26-30

III. The saved are not to go through the wrath (The Tribulation Period). Vs. 4-11

    A. The saved are not in darkness. Vs. 4, Ephesians 5:8

       1. The day of the Lord should not overtake you as a thief. Vs. 4

    B. The saved are children of the light. Vs. 5, John 12:36

    C. The saved are children of the day. Vs. 5

    D. The saved are not of the night or darkness. Vs. 5

    E. The saved are not to sleep as do others. Vs. 6, Romans 13:11-13

       1. The saved are to watch and be sober. Vs. 6, 2 Timothy 4:5, 1 Peter 4:7

       2. The lost sleep in the night. Vs. 7

       3. The lost are drunk in the night. Vs. 7

    F. The saved are of the day. Vs. 8, 1 John 1:7

       1. The saved are to be sober. Vs. 8

       2. The saved are to put on the breastplate of faith. Vs. 8, Ephesians 6:16

       3. The saved are to put on the helmet, the hope of salvation. Vs. 8 Ephesians 6:17

    G. God has not appointed the saved to wrath. Vs. 9

       1. Wrath is the Tribulation Period. 1 Thessalonians 1:10

    H. The saved will obtain salvation from the wrath. Vs. 9

       1. By our Lord Jesus Christ. Vs. 9

          a. The Lord himself is coming to take us out (Rapture) of the world. Thessalonians 4:16

       2. Jesus died for us. Vs. 10 Matthew 20:28, John 10:11, John 10:15, John 15:13, Romans 5:6-8, Romans 8:34

       3. Whether dead or alive the saved will live together with him. Vs. 10, Romans 14:9, 1 Thessalonians 4:17

    I. Continue to comfort your selves together. Vs. 11

    J. Continue to edify (build) one another. Vs. 11, 1 Corinthians 14:12 Ephesians 4:16, Ephesians 4:29

IV. Have respect for the church staff and teachers. Vs. 12-13

    A. Know those who work among you. Vs. 12

       1. Those that are over you in the Lord. Vs. 12

       2. Those that admonish you. Vs. 12 Hebrews 13:17

    B. Esteem them very highly in love. Vs. 13

       1. Because of their work in the Lord. Vs. 13

       2. Be at peace among yourselves, trust them. Vs. 13 1 Corinthians 4:1-2, 1 Timothy 5:17-18, 2 Timothy 2:6, 1 Corinthians 9:7-11, 2 Corinthians 9:10, Hebrews 12:14, James 3:18

V. Our duty to all people in the church. Vs. 14-15

    A. Warn them that are unruly. Vs. 14

    B. Comfort the feebleminded. Vs. 14

    C. Support the weak. Vs. 14 Romans 14:1, Romans 15:1, Galatians 6:1-2, Hebrews 12:12, Acts 20:35

    D. Be patient toward all men. Vs. 14

    E. Do not render evil for evil. Vs. 15 Leviticus 19:18, Matthew 5:44-45, Romans 12:17-21

    F. Follow that which is good. Vs. 15 Romans 14:19, 3 John 1:11, Galatians 6:10

VI. Our personal conduct. Vs. 16-22

    A. Rejoice evermore. Vs. 16 Philippians 4:4

    B. Pray without ceasing. Vs. 17 Romans 12:12, Ephesians 6:18, Colossians 4:2, 1 Peter 4:7

    C. In every thing give thanks. Vs. 18

       1. This is the will of God. Vs. 18 Ephesians 5:20, Philippians 4:6, Colossians 3:17, Hebrews 13:15, 1 John 2:17

    D. Quench not the Spirit. Vs. 19 Psalms 51:11, Luke 11:13

    E. Despise not prophesying. Vs. 20 1 Corinthians 12:28

       1. Prophecy is the preaching of the Word of God. 1 Corinthians 14:1, 1 Corinthians 14:3-6, Ephesians 4:11-12

    F. Prove all things. Vs. 21 Acts 17:11, Romans 12:2, 1 John 4:1

    G. Hold fast that which is good. Vs. 21

    H. Abstain from all appearance of evil. Vs. 22

    I. God’s blessings to us. Vs. 23-24

       1. God of peace will sanctify you wholly. Vs. 23

       2. The trinity of man. Vs. 23

          a. Spirit

          b. Soul

          c. Body

       3. You will be preserved blameless. Vs. 23

          a. Unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Vs. 23

       4. God is faithful to bless you. Vs. 24 Psalms 36:5, 2 Thessalonians 3:3

    J. Pray for your church staff. Vs. 25 Ephesians 6:18

    K. Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. Vs. 26

    L. Read the Bible to others. Vs. 27 Colossians 4:16, Revelation 1:3
