Genesis 4

I. Birth of Cain and Abel. Genesis 4:1-2

    A. Cain a farmer, Abel a shepherd.

II. The Offerings of Cain and Abel. Genesis 4:3-7,

    A. Cain offered the fruit of the ground unto the Lord. Genesis 4:31 John 3:12

       1. A thanksgiving offering.

       2. This type of offering recognizes that God provides for our worldly needs.

    B. Abel offered a lamb and God was pleased. Genesis 4:4, Hebrews 11:4

       1. A sin offering.

       2. This type of offering recognizes that we are sinners and by the blood of the Lamb we have forgiveness of sins.

    C. God did not accept Cain’s offering and Cain was upset. Genesis 4:5-7

       1. Cain’s offering indicated that Cain did not need forgiveness.

          a. There is none righteous. Romans 3:10

       2. “Sin (khat-taw-aw’, sin offering) lieth at the door.” Genesis 4:7

          a. When we sin, a sin offering lieth at the door that we can offer.

          b. Repentance is always at hand.

          c. Jesus stands at our heart’s door. Revelation 3:20

          d. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins” 1 John 1:9-10

       3. Cain was only interested in things of the flesh. Romans 8:5-8

III. Cain thought he lost his birthright, because God favored Abel’s offering. Genesis 4:7

    A. God assured Cain that he would rule over Abel.

IV. Cain did not believe God and killed his brother to insure his birthright. Genesis 4:8

V. God reminds Cain that he is responsible for others. Genesis 4:9

VI. The punishment of Cain’s sin. Genesis 4:10-15

    A. Sin is known to God. Genesis 4:10-11

    B. Cain will not be successful in farming. Genesis 4:12

    C. Cain will be a fugitive and a vagabond and his life always in danger. Genesis 4:13-14

    D. God put a mark upon Cain to keep others from killing him. Genesis 4:15

VII. The family of Cain and their activities. Genesis 4:16-24

    A. Cain dwelt in the land of Nod. Genesis 4:16

    B. Cain’s first son was Enoch and Cain built a city and named it Enoch. Genesis 4:17

   

C. Lamech, the orgin of polygamy. Genesis 4:18-19

    D. Jabal, the shepherd; Jubal was a famous musician; and Tubal-cain was a famous smith. Genesis 4:20-22

    E. Lamech a murderer. Genesis 4:23-24

VIII. Adam and Eve have another son, Seth. Genesis 4:25-26

    A. Seth has a son, named Enos. Genesis 4:25

    B. With Enos, men began to call upon the name of the Lord. Genesis 4:26
