Note: In the account of Abraham selecting a bride for Isaac, we can see how God selects a bride for Jesus.
• Abraham is symbolic of God, The Father. • Isaac is symbolic of God’s Son, Jesus. • The servant is symbolic of the Holy Spirit. • Rebekah is symbolic of the Bride of Jesus, the Church. I. Abraham sends his servant to get a wife for Isaac. Genesis 24:1-9 Note: God sends the Holy Spirit. John 14:26 A. The servant was to go to Abraham’s country and kindred and get a wife for Isaac. Genesis 24:1-4 Note: The Holy Spirit will go only to the saved, God’s people. John 14:16-17 (Jesus said the world [lost] cannot receive the Holy Spirit) B. If the woman that will marry Isaac will come to him, do not take Isaac there. C. Isaac is to remain in the land that God promised Abraham. D. An angel will be sent before the servant to help find a wife for Isaac. E. If the woman is not willing to come to Isaac, then the servant is not to force her. II. The servant goes to the city of Haran where Nahor, Abraham’s brother, lives. Genesis 24:10-11 A. He went to a well outside the city at a time when the women go out to draw water. III. The servant prays for a sign to help find a wife for Isaac. Genesis 24:12-14 A. He prayed that as the women came to the well, the one who would be willing to give him a drink of water and water his camels, would be the woman to be the wife of Isaac. IV. Rebekah, Abraham’s brother’s granddaughter, comes to the well. Genesis 24:15-28 A. Rebekah is very beautiful and a virgin. Genesis 24:16. B. Rebekah gave the servant a drink of water and watered his camels. Genesis 24:17-22 Note: The servant finds Rebekah at the well. The Holy Spirit finds the bride of Christ at the well of salvation. John 4:7-13, Isaiah 12:3 C. The servant gives Rebekah a golden earring and two bracelets. Genesis 24:22 D. The servant inquires who she is and if he could stay at her father’s house. Genesis 24:23 E. Rebekah tells the servant that she is Nahor’s granddaughter and that he could lodge at her father’s house. Genesis 24:24-25 V. The servant worshipped and thanks God for leading him so quickly to the house of Abraham’s brethren. Genesis 24:26-27 VI. The servant tells that he is there to find a wife for Isaac. Genesis 24:28-48 Note: Rebekah only knew about Isaac from the servant. The bride of Christ only knows about Jesus from the Holy Spirit. John 16:13-14. VII. The servant asks for permission to take Rebekah to Isaac to be his wife. Genesis 24:49-52 A. Permission is given and the servant worships God. VIII. The servant gives Rebekah a dowry (earnest of the inheritance). Genesis 24:53 Note: The dowry (earnest) for the bride of Christ is the seal of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1:13-14 IX. The servant wants to leave with Rebekah the next day. Genesis 24:54-60 A. Rebekah’s family wants the servant to stay a few days. Genesis 24:54-56 B. Rebekah is to the make the decision if she wants to go and she does. Genesis 24:57-59 Note: Rebekah had to be willing to go. The Christians must be willing to be married to Jesus. Romans 7:4, Philippians 3:13-14, (The prize of high calling is to be married to Christ.) 2 Corinthians 11:1-3 C. They blessed her and said, “Be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.” Genesis 24:60. X. Rebekah meets Isaac. Genesis 24:61-66 A. Rebekah follows the servant. Genesis 24:61 B. Rebekah sees Isaac in the field. Genesis 24:62-64 Note: The bride of Christ will meet Jesus in the air, Rapture. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 C. The servant introduces Rebekah to Isaac. Genesis 24:65-66 D. Rebekah makes herself ready for the marriage. Genesis 24:65 Note: The bride of Christ makes herself ready for the marriage by living a righteous life. Revelation 19:7-8 XI. Isaac and Rebekah are married in Sarah’s tent.
