I. David anointed king. Vs. 1-13
A. God sends Samuel to the house of Jesse the Bethlehemite to anoint a new king. Vs. 1 B. Samuel was afraid that Saul would kill him if he knew what he was doing. Vs. 2 C. God told Samuel to go to Bethlehem and offer a sacrifice and invite Jesse. Vs. 3 D. Seven of Jesse’s sons were brought before Samuel at the sacrifice. Vs. 4-10 1. Samuel thought by the appearance of the oldest son, that he would be the one God would have as king. Vs. 6 2. God said no: “’The Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” Vs. 7 3. After the seven sons passed by, Samuel wanted to know if there were any more. Vs. 8-11 E. Jesse told Samuel that his youngest son was tending the sheep. Vs. 11 F. When David came in, God told Samuel to anoint him as king. Vs. 12-13 II. David plays the harp for Saul. Vs. 14-23 A. The Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul. Vs. 14 B. God sent an evil spirit to trouble him. Vs. 14 C. Only music could calm Saul. Vs. 15-17 D. David was called to be Saul’s armor-bearer and to play the harp when the evil spirit troubled Saul. Vs. 18-23 1. The characteristics of David. Vs. 18 a) Cunning in playing b) A mighty valiant man c) A man of war d) Prudent in matters e) A comely person f) The Lord is with him E. David found favor in Saul’s sight. Vs. 22-23
