I. The challenge of Goliath. Vs. 1-11
A. The Philistines came against Israel. Vs. 1-2 B. The Philistines were on one mountain and Israel was on another mountain with a valley between them. Vs. 3 C. The Philistine, named Goliath, challenged Israel to a personal battle between an Israeli and himself. Vs. 4-10 1. Goliath was 11 feet, 4 inches tall. Vs. 4 2. Goliath’s coat of armor weighed 156 pounds. Vs. 5 3. Goliath’s spear head weighed 37 pounds. Vs. 7 II. Jesse sends David to take some food to his brothers in battle. Vs. 12-22 III. David hears Goliath’s challenge. Vs. 23-24 IV. David wants to accept Goliath’s challenge. Vs. 25-30 V. David is brought before Saul. Vs. 31-39 A. Saul thinks that David is too young. Vs. 33 B. David tells Saul that he is able to kill Goliath. Vs. 32-37 1. David tells of his experiences of killing a lion and a bear with the power of God. Vs. 34-37 C. Saul gives David his armor. Vs. 38-39 D. David did not want to use the king’s armor. Vs. 39 VI. David kills Goliath. Vs. 40-51 A. David is armed only with a sling and 5 smooth stones. Vs. 40 1. Why 5 stones? I believe that David wanted a stone for Goliath and his four brothers, if they showed up. 2 Samuel 21:18-22 B. David tells Goliath that he will kill him by the power of God. Vs. 41-47 1. “And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.” Vs. 47 C. David kills Goliath with a stone from his sling. Vs. 48-50 D. David takes Goliath’s sword and cuts his head off. Vs. 51 VII. The Philistines flee from Israel. Vs. 52-53 VIII. Saul wants to know who David is. Vs. 55-58
