I. David spares Saul’s life. Vs. 1-7
A. Saul took 3,000 chosen men to go after David. Vs. 1-2 B. Saul rested in a cave in the sheepcotes. Vs. 3 C. David was in the back of the cave along the sides. Vs. 3 D. David’s men encouraged him to kill Saul. Vs. 4 E. David cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe without Saul knowing it. Vs. 4-6 1. “The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD’S anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.” Vs. 6 F. David kept his men from taking Saul’s life. Vs. 7 G. Saul rose up and left the cave to go his way. Vs. 7 II. David pleads his innocence. Vs. 8-15 A. David came out of the cave and called Saul. Vs. 8 B. David bowed himself before Saul. Vs. 8 C. David asks Saul who told him that David was trying to kill him. Vs. 9 D. David shows Saul part of the skirt that he cut off and that he could have killed him. Vs. 10-11 E. David assures Saul that he would never try to kill him. Vs. 12-15 III. Saul acknowledges his error. Vs. 16-22 A. After David finished talking, Saul wept. Vs. 16 B. Saul told David that he was more righteous. Vs. 17-19 C. Saul acknowledged that David will be king of Israel. Vs. 20 D. Saul asked David not to destroy his family after he is gone, and David agrees. Vs. 21-22 E. Saul goes back to his home and David with his men stay. Vs. 22
