I. Six sons born to David at Hebron. Vs. 1-5

II. Abner’s desertion to David. Vs. 6-21

    A. Abner feels betrayed and insulted by Ish-bosheth. Vs. 6-11

    B. Abner sends messengers to David to see if he could join David’s army. Vs. 12

    C. David will agree if Abner will bring Michal, his wife, to him. Vs. 13

    D. David sends messengers to Ish-bosheth asking for Michal. Vs. 14-16

    E. Abner encouraged Israel and Benjamin to follow David as king. Vs. 17-19

    F. David makes a feast for Abner and the 20 men that came with him. Vs. 20

    G. Abner asks David to let him go and encourage all of Israel to follow David as king. Vs. 21

III. Joab kills Abner. Vs. 22-39

    A. After Abner leaves, Joab returns from battle and learns of the league between Abner and David. Vs. 22-23

    B. Joab tells David that Abner came to deceive him. Vs. 24-25

    C. Joab sends for Abner without David knowing it. Vs. 26

    D. Under the deceit of friendship, Joab kills Abner. Vs. 27

       1. Joab and Abishai killed Abner in revenge of the death of Asahel their brother. Vs. 30

    E. David mourns the death of Abner. Vs. 28-39
