I. The defeat of the Ammonites and Syrians. Vs. 1-19
A. David sends servants to comfort Hanun, the king of Ammon, when his father died. Vs. 1-2 B. The princes of Ammon told Hanun that the servants were not there to comfort, but to spy on the city to overthrow it. Vs. 3 C. Hanun shamed the servants by cutting off half of their beards and clothes. Vs. 4-5 D. The Ammonites hired The Syrians to fight against David. Vs. 6 1. They Syrians of Beth-rehob. 2. 20,000 footmen of the Syrians of Zoba. 3. 1,000 men of the king of Maacah. 4. 12,000 men of Ishtob. E. David has Joab and his army go against the Ammonites and Syrians. Vs. 7-14 1. The Ammonite soldiers are at the city gate. Vs. 8 2. The Syrians are in the field. Vs. 8 3. Joab and his men will fight against the Syrians. Vs. 9 4. Abishai, Joab’s brother, will fight against the Ammonites. Vs. 10-12 5. The Syrians fled before Joab. Vs. 13 6. The Ammonites fled before Abishai. Vs. 14 7. The armies of Israel return to Jerusalem. Vs. 14 F. The Syrians gather themselves together again to fight against Israel. Vs. 15-19 1. Hadarezer gathered the Syrians who were beyond the river to Helam. Vs. 15-16 2. Shobach is the captain of the Syrians. Vs. 16 3. David sends his army to Helam. Vs. 17 4. Israel slew Shobach, 700 chariot men, and 40,000 horsemen. Vs. 18 5. The Syrians made peace with Israel and would not help the Ammonites any more. Vs. 19
