2 Samuel 12


I. Nathan rebukes David. Vs. 1-12

    A. God sends Nathan to rebuke David. Vs. 1

    B. Nathan tells David a parable. Vs. 2-4

       1. Two men in one city; one rich and the other poor. Vs. 1

       2. The rich man has many flocks and herds. Vs. 2

       3. The poor man had nothing but a little ewe lamb as a pet. Vs. 3

       4. The rich man had a visitor but did not take any of his own flock to feed him. Instead, he took the poor man’s only lamb. Vs. 4

    C. David was angry. Vs. 5-6

       1. David ruled that the man who did this would die. Vs. 5

       2. David ruled that the man would restore the lamb fourfold, because the man had no pity. Vs. 6

    D. Nathan tells David that he is the man. Vs. 7-12

       1. God made David king and protected him. Vs. 7

       2. God gave David many wives and all that he needed. Vs. 8

       3. David broke the commandments of God by committing adultery with Bath-sheba and killing Uriah. Vs. 9

    E. God pronounces judgment upon David. Vs. 10-12

       1. The sword will never depart from David’s house. Vs. 10

          a) Bath-sheba’s child died. Vs. 18

          b) David’s son Amnon was slain. 2 Samuel 13:28-29

          c) David’s son Adonijah was slain. 1 Kings 2:24-25

          d) Athaliah destroyed all the seed of David except Joash. 2 Kings 11:1-2

       2. David will have conflict from his own house. Vs. 11

       3. A neighbor would lie with David’s wives, and everyone would know it. Vs. 11-12

          a) Absalom lies with David’s wives in the sight of all Israel. 2 Samuel 16:20-22

II. David’s repentance and sorrow. Vs. 13-23

    A. David repents. Vs. 13

    B. The child of Bath-sheba will die, because David’s sin would help Israel’s enemies to blaspheme the Lord. Vs. 14

       1. Bath-sheba’s child became very sick. Vs. 15

       2. David fasted seven days for the healing of the child. Vs. 16-18

       3. The child died, and David stopped his fasting. Vs. 18-20

       4. The servants wanted to know why he did not mourn after the death of his child. Vs. 21

       5. David’s answer: “And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live? But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.” Vs. 22-23

III. The birth of Solomon. Vs. 24-25

    A. David named the child, Solomon—peaceful. Vs. 24

    B. God named the child, Jedidiah -Beloved of the Lord. Vs. 25

IV. David captures Rabbah. Vs. 26-31

    A. Joab wanted David to come and finish the battle against Rabbah so that David would receive the glory. Vs. 26-30

    B. David had the captives sawed, torn apart, chopped with axes, made them walk on coals of fire and be burned. Vs. 31

    C. David brought in great abundance the spoils of the enemy to Jerusalem. Vs. 30-31
