2 Samuel 15


I. Absalom revolts against David. Vs. 1-12

    A. Absalom travels around Jerusalem with chariots and horses, and fifty men running before him. Vs.1

    B. Absalom stands by the king’s gate. Vs. 2-6

        1. Absalom greets all who come to the gate for the king to settle their controversy. Vs. 2

        2. Absalom assures them that he would do justice for them. Vs. 3-4

        3. Absalom takes their hands and kisses them. Vs. 5

       4. Absalom steals the hearts of the men of Israel. 6

    C. David is now in the 40th year of his reign. Vs. 7

    D. Absalom asks David for permission to go to Hebron to pay his vow. Vs. 7-8

    E. David allows Absalom to go to Hebron. Vs. 9

    F. Absalom organizes his opposition against David. Vs. 10-12

II. David flees from Jerusalem. Vs. 13-37

    A. David hears that the men of Israel are following Absalom. Vs. 13

    B. David gathers all his servants and leaves Jerusalem. Vs. 14

    C. David leaves ten concubines. Vs. 15

    D. David observes his servants who pass by to go with him. Vs. 17-18

        1. The Cherethites

        2. The Pelethites

        3. The Gittites

    E. David questions Ittai as to why he is going with him. Vs. 19-22

    F. The people weet as David and his servants pass over the brook Kidron. Vs. 23

        1. This is where the garden of Gethsemane will be located in the time of Jesus, when he is betrayed by Judas. John 18:1-12

    G. Zadok and the Levites follow David with the Ark of the Covenant of God. Vs. 24

    H. David instructs Zadok to take the Ark back to Jerusalem and keep him informed about what Absalom is doing. Vs. 25-29

    I. David walks barefoot up Mount Olivet and worships God. Vs. 30-32

    J. Hushai, David’s friend, wants to follow David. Vs. 32-33

    K. David instructs Hushai to stay in Jerusalem and serve Absalom. Vs. 34-37

        1. Hushai is to defeat the counsel of Ahithophel. Vs. 34

        2. Hushai is to report to Zadok and Abiathar the priest what Absalom is doing. Vs. 35

    L. Absalom returns to Jerusalem.
