Sermon on the Mount

A. The Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 5-7

    1. The multitudes and disciples were there. Matthew 5:1

       a. His disciples came. Matthew 5:1

          1) Disciple, one who wants to learn, a pupil.

       b. “The people were astonished at his doctrine” Matthew 7:28-29

          1) “He taught them”, them in reference to the people in verse 28

    2. On the side of a mountain. Matthew 5:1

B. The Sermon. Matthew 5:3-7:27

    1. What a Christian should be and the blessings. Matthew 5:3-12

       a. Christians are to be poor in spirit. (Humble)

          1) Theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

       b. Christians are to mourn, that godly sorrow which worketh true repentance.

          1) They shall be comforted.

       c. Christians are to be meek.

          1) They shall inherit the earth.

       d. Christians are to hunger and thirst after righteousness.

          1) They shall be filled.

       e. Christians are to be merciful.

          1) They shall obtain mercy.

       f. Christians are to be pure in heart.

          1) They shall see God.

       g. Christians are to be peacemakers.

          1) They shall be called the children of God.

       h. Christians are to suffer for Christ (persecuted).

          1) Theirs is the kingdom of heaven and great is their reward in heaven.

    2. Christians are the salt of the earth. Matthew 5:13

       a. Salt without savour are lost church members.

    3. Christians are the light of the world. Matthew 5:14-16

       a. The light cannot be hid, like a city on a hill. Matthew 5:14

       b. The light is not be hidden. Matthew 5:15

       c. The light is to be on a candlestick that all may see. Matthew 5:15

          1) Candlestick is a local church. Revelation 1:20

       d. The light is God’s good works through Christians. Matthew 5:16

       e. The light is to glorify God. Matthew 5:16

    4. Jesus came not to destroy or change the Law (The Bible), but to fulfill it. Matthew 5:17-20

       a. The Law (The Bible) is eternal.

       b. The law does not make you righteous.

    5. Christians are to obey the law in deed and thought. Matthew 5:21-30

       a. Anger is as deadly as murder and the punishment is the same. Matthew 5:21-26

       b. Adultery is the same in thought or deed. Matthew 5:27-30

    6. Christians are to have great respect for marriage. Matthew 5:31-32

       a. Fornication is the ground for divorce.

    7. Christians are to value their words. Matthew 5:33-37

       a. Christians are not to swear at all.

       b. A Christian’s word should be plain, trustworthy and true.

    8. Christians are not to get revenge. Matthew 5:38-42

       a. Christians are to turn the other cheek.

    9. Christians are to love their enemies. Matthew 5:43-48

       a. Christians are to help and pray for their enemies.

    10. Christians are not to boast of their charity. Matthew 6:1-4

    11. How Christians are to pray. Matthew 6:5-13

       a. Do not pray to impress men with your words. Matthew 6:5-6

       b. Do not pray long prayers and do not use vain repetitions. Matthew 6:7-8

       c. Pray to the Father only. Matthew 6:9

       d. Honor His name. Matthew 6:9

       e. Pray for God’s will. Matthew 6:10

       f. Pray for daily food. Matthew 6:11

       g. Pray for forgiveness as you forgive. Matthew 6:12

       h. Pray for divine guidance and deliverance. Matthew 6:13

       i. Acknowledge the authority of God. Matthew 6:13.

    12. Christians are to forgive. Matthew 6:14-15

    13. How Christians are to fast. Matthew 6:16-18

       a. Do not fast in public, only in secret.

    14. The treasures of a Christian are in Heaven. Matthew 6:19-21

    15. Christians are to have spiritual discernment. Matthew 6:22-23

    16. Christians are to serve only one master. Matthew 6:24

    17. Christians are to trust only in God. Matthew 6:25-34

       a. Christians are to trust God for their food and clothing.

       b. Christians are to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.

    18. Christians are not to pass judgment upon others. Matthew 7:1-2

    19. Christians are to examine themselves (practice what they teach) before helping someone else. Matthew 7:3-5

    20. Christians are to give responsibly. Matthew 7:6

    21. Christians are to ask, seek and knock of God. Matthew 7:7-11

    22. The Christian’s golden rule. Matthew 7:12

    23. Two ways of life. Matthew 7:13-14

       a. The broad way leads to destruction.

       b. The narrow way leads to life.

    24. False prophets. Matthew 7:15-20

       a. Wolves in sheep clothing.

       b. Identified by their fruits.

    25. To be a Christian you must have a personal relationship with Jesus. Matthew 7:21-23

    26. Two foundations of life. Matthew 7:24-29

       a. Both builders heard the Word. Matthew 7:24, 26

       b. One builder obeyed the Word. Matthew 7:24-25

          1) A foundation of rock is to obey.

       d. One builder disobeyed the Word. Matthew 7:26-27

          1) A foundation of sand is to disobey.

C. The results of the sermon. Matthew 7:28-29

    1. “The people were astonished”. Matthew 7:28

    2. Jesus taught with authority. Matthew 7:29
