A. Jesus heals a paralyzed man. Matthew 9:1-8 [Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5:17-26]
1. Jesus went to Capernaum by ship. Matthew 9:1 2. They brought a man on a bed sick of the palsy to Jesus. Matthew 9:2 3. Jesus saw the faith of the ones who brought the man. Matthew 9:2 4. Because of their faith (not the one who was sick) Jesus forgave the sins of the one who was sick. Matthew 9:2 5. The scribes accused Jesus of blaspheme because he claimed to be God by forgiving sins. Matthew 9:3 6. Was it easier to say “Thy sins be forgiven thee;” or to say, “Arise, and walk?” Matthew 9:5 7. Jesus said “Thy sins be forgiven thee” to show that He had power on earth to forgive sins. Matthew 9:6 8. Some sickness is related to sins. Matthew 9:6 9. The man sick of palsy was healed. Matthew 9:7 10. When the multitudes saw it they glorified God. Matthew 9:8 B. Jesus calls Matthew. Matthew 9:9 [Mark 2:13-14; Luke 5:27-28] C. Jesus as a guest in Matthew’s home. Matthew 9:10-13 [Mark 2:15-17; Luke 5:29-32] 1. Jesus ate with publicans and sinners. Matthew 9:10 2. The Pharisees were upset. Matthew 9:11 3. Jesus states two of his missions. a. Jesus came to heal the sick. Matthew 9:12 b. Jesus came to call the sinners to repentance. Matthew 9:13 4. Jesus said “Learn what this means” which is that all are sinners and sick. Matthew 9:13 D. The question about fasting from John the Baptist’s disciples. Matthew 9:14-15 [Mark 2:18-20; Luke 5:30-35] 1. Why don’t your disciples fast? Matthew 9:14 2. Because they are the children of the bride chamber and the bridegroom (Jesus) is here. Matthew 9:15 E. Parables of the new cloth and new bottles. Matthew 9:16-17 [Mark 2:21-22; Luke 5:36-37] 1. A patch on a cloth will make the tear worse in time to come. Matthew 9:16 2. New wine in old bottles will ruin both the wine and bottle. Matthew 9:17 F. The request to raise a ruler’s dead daughter. Matthew 9:18-19 [Mark 5:21-24; Luke 8:41-42] 1. The daughter is dead and Jairus believes that Jesus can bring her back to life. Matthew 9:18 G. A woman touches the garment of Jesus. Matthew 9:20-22 [Mark 5:25-34; Luke 8:43-48] 1. A woman with an issue of blood for 12 years touches the back of the garment of Jesus. Matthew 9:20 2. The woman believed that by touching the hem of his garment she would be whole. Matthew 9:21 3. Jesus said her faith, not the touching of his garment, made her whole. Matthew 9:22 H. Jesus brought the ruler’s dead daughter back to life. Matthew 9:23-26 [Mark 5:35-43; Luke 8:49-56] 1. Jesus relates the word sleep to death. Matthew 9:23-24 2. Jesus took the dead girl by the hand, and brought her back to life. Matthew 9:25 3. The fame of Jesus went into all the land. Matthew 9:26 I. Two blind men receive their sight. Matthew 9:27-31 1. Two blind me followed Jesus. Matthew 9:27 2. They approached him as the “Son of David”. Matthew 9:27 3. Jesus wanted to know if they believed he was able to give them sight. Matthew 9:28 4. When they said yes, Jesus touched their eyes and they were healed according to their faith. Matthew 9:29 5. Jesus told them not to tell anyone. Why? Matthew 9:30 a. Because people must come to Jesus by faith and not by sight. Ephesians 2:8-9; Hebrews 11:6 J. Jesus heals a dumb man. Matthew 9:32-34 1. A dumb man was possessed with a devil. Matthew 9:32 a. Not all dumb people are possessed with a devil, but this one was. b. Demon possession can cause people to be dumb (speechless). K. The Galilean Ministry continues as Jesus preaches and heals the people. Matthew 9:35 [Mark 6:6] 1. Jesus saw the multitudes. Matthew 9:35-36 2. Jesus was moved with compassion. Matthew 9:36 a. Because they fainted. b. They were as sheep scattered without a shepherd. 3. Jesus saw them and their needs as his harvest that needs to be taken care of. Matthew 9:37-38 a. Not enough laborers for the harvest. b. Pray that the Lord of the harvest would send forth laborers into his harvest.
