A. Jesus chooses the twelve. Matthew 10:1-4 [Mark 3:13-19; Luke 6:12-16]
1. Jesus gave the twelve special powers. Matthew 10:1 a. To cast out unclean spirits. b. To heal all manner of sickness. c. To heal all manner of diseases. 2. The names of the twelve apostles. Matthew 10:2-4 a. Simon, who is called Peter. b. Andrew the brother of Peter. c. James, the son of Zebedee. d. John, the son of Zebedee. e. Philip. f. Bartholomew. g. Thomas. h. Matthew the publican. i. James, the son of Alpheus. j. Lebbaeus whose surname was Thaddaeus. k. Simon the Canaanite. l. Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. B. The first mission of the twelve is to Israel. Matthew 10:5-42 [Mark 6:7-13; Luke 9:1-6] 1. Do not go in the way of the Gentiles or any city of the Samaritans. Matthew 10:5 2. Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Matthew 10:6 3. Preach “The kingdom of heaven is at hand”. Matthew 10:7 4. Heal the sick. Matthew 10:8 5. Cleanse the lepers. Matthew 10:8 6. Raise the dead. Matthew 10:8 7. Cast out devils. Matthew 10:8 8. “Freely ye have received, freely give.” Matthew 10:8 9. Your money, food, clothing and other expenses are to be provided by those who hear you. Matthew 10:9-10 10. In each city, find a worthy home to stay in. Matthew 10:11-15 a. If a city or home receives you, bless it. Matthew 10:12-13 b. If a city or home does not receive you, or hear you, “shake off the dust of your feet”. Matthew 10:14 1) That city will be punished more than Sodom and Gomorrha. Matthew 10:15 11. You are sheep in the midst of wolves. Matthew 10:16 a. Be wise as serpents. b. Be harmless as doves. 12. You will be persecuted. Matthew 10:17-23 a. You will be tried and accused. 1) In the councils (State church conventions). Matthew 10:17 2) In the synagogues (churches). Matthew 10:17 3) In courts of law. Matthew 10:18 b. The Holy Spirit will speak through you. Matthew 10:19-20 1) Take no thought how or what you will say. 2) You will know at that hour what you are to say. 3) The Holy Spirit will speak through you. 13. People will be divided as you teach God’s word. Matthew 10:21 a. Brother against brother. b. Parents against their children. c. Children against their parents. 14. You will be hated by all. Matthew 10:22 a. If you will endure, at the end they will love you. 15. When you are persecuted in one city, go to another. Matthew 10:23 a. Jesus is coming. 16. You are not above Jesus. Matthew 10:24-25 a. You are to be like Jesus, but not equal or better than Jesus. b. If they hate Jesus, then they will hate you. 17. Do not be afraid. Matthew 10:26-31 a. What is done in secret will be revealed. Matthew 10:26-27 b. Man cannot kill the soul. Matthew 10:28 c. Fear God, who can kill both the body and soul in hell. Matthew 10:28 d. God watches over a sparrow. Matthew 10:29-31 1) You are of more value than many sparrows. 2) “The very hairs of your head are all numbered”. 18. You are to confess Jesus before men. Matthew 10:32-33 a. Jesus will confess you before God. b. If you deny Jesus before men, Jesus will deny you before God. 19. The cost of commitment. Matthew 10:34-39 a. Jesus did not come to send peace, but a sword on earth. Matthew 10:34 b. The teachings of Jesus will cause family conflict. Matthew 10:835 c. “A man’s foes shall be they of his own household”. Matthew 10:36 d. Jesus must have priority in your life, even over your family. Matthew 10:37 e. You must be willing to die to everything, but God. Matthew 10:38-39 20. To receive Christ is to receive his ministers. Matthew 10:40-41 21. You will not lose your reward as you give to children in the name of the Lord. Matthew 10:42
