Acts 1
I. Introduction Vs. 1-5 A. Theophilus is a Greek name meaning “lover of God”. Vs. 1 1. The lovers of God will understand the continuing ministry of Jesus through his followers. B. Jesus personally acted and taught until his ascension. Vs. 2 C. Before his ascension he instructed his apostles. Vs. 2 1. Through the Holy Ghost Jesus gave commandment unto the apostles. Vs. 2 D. Jesus with many “infallible proofs” showed himself alive. Vs. 3 1. Jesus was seen by the apostles for 40 days. Vs. 3 2. Jesus spoke about the things pertaining to the Kingdom of God. Vs. 3 E. Jesus told his apostles to wait for the promise of the Father. Vs. 4-5 1. The baptism of the Holy Ghost. Vs. 5 II. The outline for the work of all believers and the book of Acts. Vs. 6-8 A. Is this the time the kingdom would be restored to Israel? Vs. 6-7 1. Only God knows of that time. Vs. 7 B. Until that time we are to be witnesses. Vs. 8 1. We are to witness in the power of the Holy Ghost. a. Acts chapter 2 2. In Jerusalem. Vs. 8 a. Acts chapter 2-8:4 3. In Judea and Samaria. Vs. 8 a. Acts chapter 8:4-12:25 4. Unto the uttermost part of the earth. Vs. 8 a. Acts chapter 13-28 C. “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Vs. 8 1. The word “both” teaches that by the power of the Holy Spirit in the local churches we will be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the uttermost part of the earth all at the same time. Vs. 8 III. The Ascension. Vs. 9-11 A. Jesus was taken up into the air. Vs. 9 B. A cloud received him out of their sight. Vs. 9 C. Two men in white apparel spoke to them. Vs. 10 D. “Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” Vs. 11 E. The ascension was on the Mount of Olivet. Vs. 12 IV. The upper room. Vs. 12-15 A. The upper room is in Jerusalem. Vs. 12 B. Those in the upper room. Vs. 13-15 1. Peter 2. James 3. John 4. Andrew 5. Philip 6. Thomas 7. Bartholomew 8. Matthew 9. James the son of Alphaeus 10. Simon 11. Judas the brother of James 12. Mary the mother of Jesus 13. Other women 14. The half brothers of Jesus C. About 120 were present in the upper room. Vs. 15 V. The replacement of Judas Iscariot. Vs. 15-26 A. Peter calls for a replacement of Judas Iscariot. Vs. 15 B. What Judas did and what happened to him was the fulfillment of prophecy. Vs. 16-20 1. Psalms 41:9 2. Psalms 55:12-15 3. Psalms 69:25 4. Psalms 109:8 C. Choose someone that was with us from the baptism of Jesus to his ascension. Vs. 21-22 D. This person will be ordained to be a witness of the resurrection of Jesus. Vs. 22 E. Two men were chosen. Vs. 23 1. Joseph called Barsabas, surnamed Justus. 2. Matthias F. They prayed as to which one is to be chosen. Vs. 24-25 G. They cast lots and Matthias was selected.
