Acts 5


I. Ananias and Sapphira lied to God. Vs. 1-11

    A. They sold some land. Vs. 1

    B. They agreed to tell the church that they sold the land for less than what they sold it for. Vs. 2

    C. Peter accuses Ananias of lying to the Holy Ghost. Vs. 3-4

    D. Ananias hearing these words died. Vs. 5

    E. The young men carried him out and buried him. Vs. 6

    F. Three hours later Sapphira came in not knowing what was done. Vs. 7

    G. Peter questioned Sapphira about the price of the land. Vs. 8

    H. Peter accused Sapphira of lying to the Holy Ghost. Vs. 9

    I. Sapphira hearing these words died and they carried her out and buried her. Vs. 10

    J. Great fear came upon all the church. Vs. 11

II. Many signs and wonders. Vs. 12-16

    A. The early church met in Solomon’s porch in the temple. Vs. 12

    B. Many signs and wonders were done by the apostles among the people. Vs. 12

    C. The people honored the church, but did not join. Vs. 13

    D. Only believers were added to the church. Vs. 14

       1. Multitudes both of men and women.

    E. They brought the sick and all were healed. Vs. 15-16

III. The apostles put in prison. Vs. 17-18

    A. The high priest and Sadducees were filled with indignation. Vs. 17

    B. They put the apostles in the common prison. Vs. 18

    C. That night the angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out. Vs. 19

    D. The angel of the Lord instructed them to go in the temple and preach Jesus. Vs. 20-21

    E. The next day the high priest called the council together. Vs. 21

       1. The high priest sent for the apostles in prison. Vs. 21

       2. The officers did not find them in the prison. Vs. 22-24

          a. The prison was shut and secure with the guards by the doors, but no prisoners. Vs. 23

    F. They found the apostles preaching in the temple. Vs. 25

IV. The apostles arrested again. Vs. 26-32

    A. The officer brought the apostles before the high priest without violence. Vs. 26

    B. The high priest reminded them that they were not to teach or preach about Jesus. Vs. 27-28

    C. Peter and all the apostles gave the following answer: vs. 29-32

       1. “We ought to obey God rather than men.”

       2. “The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.”

       3. “Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.”

       4. “And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.”

V. Gamaliel’s advice to the council. Vs. 33-40

    A. The council wanted to kill the apostles. Vs. 33

    B. Gamaliel, a Pharisee and a doctor of the law, advised the council to let the apostles go. Vs. 34

       1. The teaching of Theudas did not last. Vs. 36

       2. The teachings of Judas of Galilee did not last. Vs. 37

       3. What they teach will not last if it is not of God. Vs. 38

       4. If it is of God, do not fight it. Vs. 39

VI. The apostles beaten, released and continued preaching. Vs. 40-42

    A. The council beat the apostles. Vs. 40

    B. The council commanded the apostles not to preach Jesus and released them. Vs. 40

    C. The apostles rejoiced in that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for the name of Jesus. Vs. 41

    D. The apostles taught and preached about Jesus Christ. Vs. 42

       1. Daily in the temple.

       2. Daily in every house.
