Acts 13


I. Paul and Barnabas ordained as missionaries. Vs. 1-3

    A. Prophets and teachers at the church at Antioch.

       1. Barnabas

       2. Simeon that was called Niger

       3. Lucius of Cyrene

       4. Manaen who was brought up with Herod the tetrarch

       5. Saul

    B. As they fasted, the Holy Ghost said, “Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.”

    C. After they had fasted and prayed, they laid their hands on Barnabas and Saul and sent them away.

II. Paul and Barnabas first missionary journey. Vs. 4- 52 (Acts 13:4-14:28)

    A. Sent by the Holy Ghost. Vs. 4

    B. They traveled to Seleucia. Vs. 4

       1. John Mark was with Paul and Barnabas.

    C. They sailed to the island of Cyprus. Vs. 4

       1. They preached in the synagogues at Salamis. Vs. 5

       2. They went to Paphos. Vs. 6-12

          a. Opposition by the sorcerer Barjesus. Vs. 6-8

          b. Saul, who is now called Paul, rebukes Barjesus. Vs. 9-10

          c. Barjesus made blind. Vs. 11

          d. The deputy was astonished at the doctrine of the Lord and believed. Vs. 12

    D. They sailed to Perga in Pamphylia. Vs. 13

       1. John Mark left them and went back to Jerusalem.

    E. They traveled to Antioch in Pisidia. Vs. 14-50

       1. On the Sabbath they went into the synagogue. Vs. 14

       2. After the reading of the scriptures, Paul and Barnabas were asked if they had anything to say. Vs. 15

       3. Paul’s sermon at Antioch in Pisidia. Vs. 16-41

          a. Paul addressed the men of Israel and those who fear God.

          b. History of Israel rehearsed

             1) God chose Abraham and enlarged the nation of Israel in Egypt.

             2) God brought them out of Egypt and lead them for 40 years in the wilderness.

             3) God gave them the land of Canaan.

             4) God gave them judges for 450 years until the prophet Samuel.

             5) God gave them king Saul for 40 years.

             6) God gave them king David.

          c. Jesus, the Promised Messiah

             1) God would give Israel a Savior of the seed of David, Jesus.

             2) John the Baptist preached Jesus as the Christ.

             3) Jesus was sent to Israel first.

             4) Israel had Jesus crucified on a cross.

          d. Jesus, the resurrected one

             1) God raised Jesus from the dead.

             2) Jesus was seen alive for many days.

             3) Paul quotes Psalms 2:7, and 16:10

          e. Jesus the Savior

             1) Now we have forgiveness of sins through Jesus.

       4. The Gentiles wanted to hear more about Jesus. Vs. 42-43

       5. Opposition by the Jews. Vs. 44-45

       6. Because of the rejection of the Jews, Paul and Barnabas now turn to the Gentiles. Vs. 46-48

       7. Paul and Barnabas were expelled from Antioch of Pisidia. Vs. 50-51

          a. They shook off the dust of their feet against them.

    F. They traveled to Iconium. Vs. 51-52
